From Malnutrition to Recovery: When Early Care Makes a Difference

09/17/2026 6:11pm

Four-year-old Shahzain had been struggling with poor weight gain, a reduced appetite and low energy. Unlike other children his age, he lacked the strength and enthusiasm to play and take part in everyday activities.

Concerned about his health, Shahzain’s family brought him to Doctors Worldwide’s hospital. A nutritional assessment at the clinic found that he was close to severe acute malnutrition. Recognising the need for timely intervention, the medical team enrolled him into our Malnutrition Management Programme and developed a tailored treatment plan, including nutritional support and regular follow-up.

His caregiver was also given guidance on child feeding, hygiene and how to support his nutritional needs at home. The family attended follow-up appointments and continued with the recommended care.

When early care makes a difference

Over the following weeks, Shahzain’s appetite and energy began to improve. He became more active and playful, and his family began to see a difference in his day-to-day wellbeing.

In just 3 months, Shahzain had recovered and was no longer classified as malnourished.

Good health should never be a matter of chance.

Shahzain’s story shows why timely nutritional screening, appropriate treatment and continued follow-up can make a difference for children experiencing malnutrition.

Shahzain is one of many children in Pakistan affected by malnutrition. Across the country, around 10 million children under five are affected by stunting, while 5 million are affected by wasting (WHO). Globally, undernutrition is associated with around 2.7 million deaths among children under five each year.

Your support for our work in Pakistan helps children and families access essential healthcare, nutritional assessments, treatment and ongoing support when they need it. Good health enables people and communities to define their own future.

For children like Shahzain, access to the right care at the right time can help them recover, regain their strength and get back to the everyday activities that are an important part of childhood.
