Stories From Rwanda: Saydat

Saydat Kabagwira – Living with Epilepsy and Cerebral Palsy in Rwanda

Saydat lives in Nyarugenge district, Rwampara. She’s only 13 years old, and suffers from cerebral palsy and epilepsy. Saydat’s conditions have been badly managed, and require constant care and management in order for her to have any quality of life.

She lives in an old, dilapidated house with her mother and 2 brothers. Saydat’s father unfortunately passed away in 2018 after suffering from a chronic disease, which has left Saydat’s mother as the only person to care for her daughter. Saydat can’t be left on her own, and her mother has no means of earning money due to being her primary carer.

Saydat has had no access to education, and her family hardly has enough food to get through the day. Each and every day is a struggle just to survive, and the future of this young teenager’s quality of life seems desperately bleak.  Saydat’s family receive help from Mutual de Sante, which is Rwanda’s national insurance scheme, and food support. The basic needs of Saydat’s family are still not being met; they require housing rehabilitation, regular food support and Saydat deserves an education.

Doctor’s worldwide is working alongside a local organisation to put your donations to use providing long term care for Saydat through a holistic package that looks at all of Sadyat’s and her family’s needs. Patients like her do not have access to the same quality of healthcare that many of us do, and we serve Saydat and her family by easing the pressure on them to care for her. Now, her mother has an opportunity to work and provide for her children, and Saydat has the long-term health management she needs to enable a healthier, happier future.

To help  people like Saydat and many of the other patients and families we support , you can donate here. Access to quality healthcare is not a privilege, it is a human right.
