DR Congo-HIV Prevention & Safe Male Circumcision Project

Between 2004-2010, Doctors Worldwide completed 220,000 circumcisions in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Male Circumcision is valued as a key element of a comprehensive HIV prevention package.  The World Health Organisation (WHO) carried out a number of trials that highlighted Male Circumcision as an effective technique to help reduce the number of men infected by HIV (upto a 60% reduction).

As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks involved.  This minor operation, in the wrong hands, can cause significant morbidity and even mortality.  In striving for quality and effectiveness our surgeon-led service carried out its work to internationally accepted operating techniques with good infection control.

In 2011, Doctors Worldwide extended the  HIV Prevention and safe male circumcision programme into Kenya.
