DoctorsWorldwide is as much as about sharing skills as it is about aid delivery. To this aim we welcome not only doctors, but dentists, nurses and midwives as well as allied health workers.

There is continual need to have an active database of health professionals willing to commit their time and expertise to projects. The duration of placements are variable and depend on the nature of the project, but as a general rule, the minimum requirement is for a placement of 2 weeks.

Even if you are unable to travel overseas for a project, we would still ask you to join our mailing list and keep informed of updates, as we may be able to use your expertise in the development and planning of projects.

We hope to attract volunteers from across a range of specialities, in order to develop projects that address health issues and inequalities in a comprehensive manner.

In most cases, you will be working in with a local operating partner organisation which will be administering the project overseas.

For those individuals that are not of a health background, we would still welcome your time in helping to fundraise, working as an office administrator, or helping us develop our networks, projects and frameworks. In addition, there will be those rare instances, where according to your skills, you may form part of a volunteer team.

There is also a need for all volunteers to advocate and raise awareness and support of DoctorsWorldwide and our health projects in their places of work, as this will help build our network, as well as provide that elusive link between institutions and charities.

Medical students may be allowed on trips to projects overseas, provided there is adequate senior supervision and sufficient resources. However, we would encourage participation of medical students in fundraising projects and attending training seminars, as we would hope you to become our next generation of volunteers.

At the moment, overseas volunteers can expect:

  • Clear instructions, project manual, identification badges, as well as pre-mission briefing prior to departure.
  • Food and accommodation will be cost neutral, as will be local travel allowance.
  • Basic security advice, as well as hiring of security staff as indicated at mission destination.
  • 24hour emergency, collect-call helpline to headquarters.

Unfortunately DoctorsWorldwide does not yet provide insurance or international travel expenses, and hence volunteers are expected to arrange their own travel insurance, visas and air tickets.

Volunteers are expected to abide by our Codes of Conduct .
