Over two million people have been affected by this earthquake and will need help urgently. More than 60 000 people have died and hundreds of thousand injured. DWW is working with Muslim Hands and other NGOs and has sent medical teams to help the victims. The First team started to work on Monday (10 October) in Muzafferabad which is the epicentre of the earthquake and where all the hospitals were destroyed. DWW also has mobile teams is working in surrounding villages. More than 10,000 patients have been treated so far.

Current project

DWW has completed purchase of land for a new Childrens hospital with in and out-patient facilites in the area designated for the new Balakot city and for a rural dispensary in a place 40 miles away called Ugi to serve as a referral point to the hospital aswell as primary care facilty in itself.
 
Work has already begun on preparing the sites, soil testing and architectural plans drawn. The aim will be to have a high calibre institution able to receive volunteers to help teach in paediatric skills to local medical staff and institutions. Preliminary talks have already been held to have visiting Consultant clinics run by specialists from the nearest teaching hospital/medical school, with agreements for students and newly qualifed doctors to come and work and learn from experienced DWW volunteers at our future hospital.

 

Completed Projects

  • DWW medical camp in Muzafferabad has been set up on 10 October 2005 at UN compound. Till May 2006 DWW volunteer medical personnel servied in that area.
  • 3 primary health clinics being run by DWW within Muslim Hands IDP Camps. We are involved in General medical and paediatric issues, wound management, and public health awareness. The camps are: 1. Tariqabad Camp 2. Chalabandi Camp 3. Jalalabad Camp. All of this work completed may 2006.
  • The Ministry of Health of Pakistani-administered Kashmir has officially handed-over one of its Basic Health Unit (B.H.U.) located at KOMIKOT effective November 1st, 2005. DWW team with the help existing BHU staff
    has resumed primary care services as of November 10th in a three-tent facility. A pre-fabricated structure erected within 4 weeks time with the support of DWW chapter in Turkey. The new structure furnished with a clinical laboratory, pharmacy, ambulance, portable x-ray and an ECG machine. The facility is now functional and sustain a daily load of about 200 patients. DWW handed over this clinic to Kashmir government as a gift to the people of KOMIKOT in May 2006.

    KOMIKOT a town approximately 30km SW of Muzaffarabad is center to a population of about 16,000 living within 5km radius of the center. The elevation of the area varies from 4000-6000 feet above the sea level.
    KOMIKOT accessible by road both from GARHI DOPATTA  and CHATHAR KALAS, is hour and half drive from the Muzaffarabad.

DWW Field Clinic and Triage Center

DWW has sent an advanced medical team to a remote and inaccessible region in the lower Neelam Valley. This team is currently working in a small village called Pateakah and has established Field Clinic and is currently working with the Pakistan military and ICRC to evacuate patients daily to Muzaffarabad.

DWW Immunization Program

DWW has undertaken an ambitious and aggressive immunization project. Our principle partners are the Pakistan MOH, Unicef and WHO. We have initiated an immunization program in the Lower Neelum Valley. Primarily in Pateakah proper and then expanding into the other parts of the valley. Immunizations given are TT, DTP, OPV, MMR and Vit A.

Balakot IDP camps

DWW provides medical service at the Muslim Hands IDP camps in Balakot area, seeing between 50-100 patients daily.

TCF and Abbas Hospitals

DWW has been supporting the TCF field hospital and has sent volunteer surgeons. They have undertaken approx.50 operations daily from the beginning.

DWW is supporting the Abbas hospital which is still intact after the earthquake. DWW volunteers are working in the hospital.
