In conjunction with the Red Crescent and Human Relief Foundation, Doctors Worldwide sent a number of specialists to Iraq between 4-18 October 2001 to undertake needs assessments in their specialities as well as undertake post-graduate training in the form of lectures, seminars and hands on training. This particular delegation comprised an Ophthalmic Surgeon, and Accident and Emergency specialist, an Orthopaedic Surgeon and a Gastroenterologist.
The commitment of their Iraqi counterparts in the face of deficiencies in equipment and medical supplies was recognised by the team. The decline in health of the general population due to poor nutrition and poor access to clean drinking water since 1991 is compounded by the decline in the training of medical personnel and the decline in the general organisation of health care. |

Information and advice on the future structure of accident emergency departments and its incorporated training needs were specifically discussed. DWW continued to liase with contacts made with the Red Crescent of Iraq and the Post Graduate deans of medical schools. We continue to send medical books and medical equipment to improve the medical education and facilities in the country.
